Kevin’s Memorial

GUINEA FOWL

Our quirky and funny guy Kevin passed away today. His new friend Jerry was by his side...pecking at him in attempts to wake Kevin up.

Kevin was one of three Guineas that I got back in 2012. The three boys were identical and impossible to tell apart. I named them all Kevin. The inspiration for the name came from the movie, "Up", where the kid named the momma bird, Kevin.

Over the years, the other two passed away and he even outlived two other Guineas. The last one passed away shortly after we moved into our new home. And for 2.5 years, Kevin lived amongst the chickens and turkeys.

Kevin was always 'lost'. He would get confused around doors and gates and he would frantically run around as if something was chasing him. He would wait for us to open the door.. even though he could fly over or go through the fencing.

Kevin was so silly and he made us all laugh with his antics. In his final months, we took in Jerry, a lone Guinea and hoped the two would become friends. Initially, Kevin pecked at his new companion. We were worried they would not get along.

But within a few days, Kevin and Jerry became inseparable. Like butt and undies.... where one went.. the other followed.

Just two days ago, I watched the two from afar. They followed each other as they foraged for food around the Grass Valley pigs. They were so quick and erratic in their movements... just so fun to watch.

We will be looking for a few more Guineas to keep Jerry company. He seems to be OK with the other birds, but we think he would be happiest with having other Guineas around him.

Thank you Kevin for all the laughs and all the times you made me late because I couldn't get you to go through the door.

Fly free Kevin.
