Edgar

GERMAN SHEPHERD

  • From: Baldwin Park, California

  • Adopted: 2022

Edgar's journey began with a rescue mission from a Los Angeles shelter that had placed him on a 72-hour countdown to euthanasia. Our attempt to express our sanctuary's interest was met with a 'first come, first served' response. With time running out, Vince and our friend Larry drove from Vacaville to LA, honoring the memory of our late Great Dane mix, Eddy.

Fate intervened when the shelter named this giant older German Shepherd 'Edgar.' He had suffered for two months, losing over 20 pounds and battling illness. Despite our planned vet exam, Edgar's condition deteriorated rapidly, leading to emergency vet visits that had us fearing the worst.

Our tears of worry turned to tears of relief as Edgar fought back with fluids, medication, and antibiotics. He remained a picky eater, but we did everything to

entice him to eat. Special meatballs for weight gain, sent by amazing supporters, were a lifeline.

A resistant urinary tract infection posed a severe threat, but Edgar's resilience prevailed. We hoped for him to see Halloween, then Thanksgiving, and Christmas. By February, he weighed 102 pounds, antibiotic-free, and healthy!

Edgar's German Shepherd disposition shines as he allows only Vince and me to pet him. He's a testament to the power of rescue, despite the substantial cost. Edgar is one of our biggest and most expensive rescues, spending over 10k in donations to pay for his veterinary costs. Some may doubt, but Edgar, and all our Lucky Ones, are unequivocally worth it.
